Review - Neon Trees – Habits
Having heard some bad reviews for this from the press, I wasn’t sure how well this would go down in all honesty. I love the lead single from Habits, the catchy Animal, that has been busy making waves on daytime radio over the past few weeks. It is a real retro indie pop track with a catchy chorus, and a hook that sinks its teeth into you from the first listen. It was a great choice as the first single, but the overall consensus was that this album was nothing special at all.
I would be disagree with that diagnosis completely. I really enjoyed Habits from start to finish, and thought it had some catchy songs, some great ideas, and was something different. Neon Trees don’t sound like any other band out there at this time, and for that, they should be applauded.
Dripping in class and showcasing a danceable swagger, they have put together a solid debut outing, and although it may have a couple of weaker track in places, it is still a really good and enjoyable album throughout.
Sins of my Youth is a catchy as hell opener, and Animal is still a MASSIVE track, no matter which way you look at it (or indeed listen). In The Next Room, Your Surrender, and 1983, and Our War, are solid tracks also, and the bonus tracks Helpless and Farther Down are also worth a listen.
Perhaps this debut is somewhat short for some folks, only clocking in at 10 tracks (inclusive of the 2 bonus tracks), but it is punchy, thrilling, and kind of leaves you wanting more by the end of the album. It will be worth keeping an eye on these guys, as they have the tools to go straight to the top.
More killer tracks like those on display here will only help them cement their claim. Could be real contenders if they continue to get better, and grow on this debut. One of the best indie pop albums, with 80’s stylings I have heard in a while, and I will definitely be listening to this again in the future.
