Review – Bruno Mars – Doo Wops And Hooligans
The debut album from the new pin-up of R&B/pop, Bruno Mars, starts off at such a high standard, with the enormo singles Grenade and Just The Way You Are kicking things off in the right gear, before Our First Time comes and chills the mood a little with an almost lounge jazz inspired soulful spin onto his distinctive vocal stylings. It threatens to go almost too laid back, and become a little boring, so it was good to hear the rest of the album flow with the summery pop tunes you would want from the latest kid on the pop scene. Already an accomplished songwriter, he has honed those skills to perfection, and put together a hugely accessible and tuneful offering, with no shortage of pop hooks and R&B/soul flavour.
For many, this will be the soundtrack to their summer, and listening to this in the sunshine, will only add to its already massive appeal.
Runaway has a real funky reggae and R&B swag to it, before The Lazy Song changes direction once again, and brings a real uptempo, almost Jason Mraz style fusion of acoustic pop, that you cant help but tap your feet to.
Marry You is destined to become the favourite of the teen girl contingent, and will without a doubt end up as live staple in the future, with every girl likely to think it is written about them. He certainly knows his target audience, and he deserves some kudos for that. It is also a very accessible song, allowing his silky voice to croon all over the hook and sound majestic in the process. That is a theme throughout the record, as Bruno Mars voice suits the music so well, and soars at times over solid accompaniment.
Count On Me, as well as Talking to the Moon, are two other highlights of this record, standing out against some of the other material here.
Doo Wops and Hooligans is an accomplished debut from the Hawaiin singer songwriter, who stamps his identity all over these tracks, and who will have girls melting for a very long time on the back of this.
