Over the years, Biffy Clyro have morphed into something very special indeed, working their way up from the toilet circuits on which they cut their teeth, to becoming bona-fide contenders, and arena fillers up and down the land. Their exponential rise culminated in their headline UK arena tour last winter, with their London leg, recorded at Wembley Arena, making the transition into Revolutions // Live at Wembley, the bands first live collection.
It is a stunning record as well,l which leans heavily on their two commercial breakthrough records, the essential Puzzle and Only Revolutions respectively. They do throw in some earlier material for their hardcore fans, but it is the newer material that sounds best, clearly written with huge aspirations in mind, and purpose built for nights such as the one recorded here.
As a band, they have hits by the bucketload, and have written some of the finest alt-rock numbers of the past few years. The highlights are many and often on Revolutions Live also, showcasing just how many phenomenal songs they, as a band, have in their collective arsenal.
The Captain is a storming opener, followed quickly by one of my favourite Biffy tracks Booooom, Blast & Ruin. Bubbles makes an appearance early as does the likes of Born On A Horse, God & Satan and Whoreses. As the album goes on though, it gets even better, buoyed by some incredible material, obviously coming out later in the set to build the live experience to a scintillating crescendo. The likes of Folding Stars, Machines and Many Of Horror are emotive, incredibly moving moments, and the power of Living Is A Problem Because Everything Dies and That Golden Rule are powerhouse songs, showing Biffy’s genius at either ended of the creative spectrum.
The closing six-pack of Machines, Who’s Got A Match, Saturday Superhouse, Many Of Horror, Glitter And Trauma and Mountains is a true testament to their live prowess, and the brilliance of their songwriting, sending the night out on a bang. It is clear from listening that they transformed a cavernous arena into a truly intimate spectacle on this night, and although it slightly loses marks as a live record can never truly imitate the live experience, it scores high.
Their headline set at Sonisphere will be unmissable!
9/10
