Review - Jacks Mannequin - People and Things
I personally fall into the category of fans who are desperate to see Andrew McMahon get back into Something Corporate mode, so some UK shows can finally happen, and we can all sing our lungs off to a long awaited rendition of Punk Rock Princess et al. However, having invested my time in People and Things, the first Jacks Mannequin release that I have ever leant ear to, I must admit, I was generally rather impressed.
Opener My Racing Thoughts could well be classed as the highlight of an enjoyable collection of piano driven pop songs, but that is not to say that the rest of the album falls flat. Release Me and Amy, I are two memorable moments, as are People Running, Amelia Jean and Platform Fire.
On the whole, it is relatively chirpy and upbeat, save for the pessimistically titled Hey, Hey, Hey, We're All Gonna Die. It hardly dampens the spirits though.
People and Things is a solid collection of addictive piano-pop, showcasing the song writing talents of Andrew McMahon to stunning effect. At times it's a little middle of the road, and perhaps lacking in killer tunes, the opening number aside, but nonetheless, this justifies the man's reasoning to continue with his Jack's Mannequin project.
That being said though, it would be nice to get that UK tour from Something Corporate. He owes us one.
I can't fault People and Things though as an album. It's pretty solid as far as they go, if ultimately a little unspectacular at times.
