3rd and 4th December 2011
With only four acts remaining, week 9 of the competition had a mixed theme of Motown and "no theme" - i.e. the song to get the act through to the final. I’m always a little loathe to Motown themed weeks on these shows; as great as the music undoubtedly is, it is never representative of the style the acts would really take on in the real world. It is always just a waste of a song choice for me.
Misha opened up with Dancing In The Street (Martha + the Vandellas) and Amelia followed with Ain't No Mountain High Enough (Marvin Gaye and Tammy Tyrell). This was yet another vocal powerhouse performance from Amelia, who continues to look evermore the star. Little Mix picked a good track in singing The Supremes' You Keep Me Hanging On, and Marcus played it somewhat safe, but still delivered in style, for his rendition of My Girl (The Temptations).
Returning for her second song, Misha B played it reflective on Pink's Perfect, before Amelia went for Avril Lavigne's I'm With You to get her through to the final. It was a great performance, but I must admit I was taken aback by her song choice. Girlfriend would have perhaps have been the better choice, but she still sung it incredibly well.
Little Mix went for Beyonce's girl power anthem If I Were A Boy, in a move that showed a different side to their vocal talents. The momentum just keeps building for them, and there was no risk of them going home tonight after two solid performances, on a week where it was obvious from the very first moment that Misha would be leaving tonight. She had survived a few times, but even she must have known that her time was up this week (and if reports should be believed, she did too, having thrown a tantrum or two in the week leading up to the semi-final).
Marcus rounded off the night's proceedings with The Jackson 5's Can You Feel It? Yet another good performance from him, and he is a star, regardless of the result of this series.
On Sunday's results show, Misha B inevitably received the lowest number of votes, and ended her tenure on the show. It had been coming for a few weeks, and she had done well to get to this stage, especially in light of the bullying comments Tulisa made early on in the competition about her. She was always a strong contender, but you never truly felt that she ever really had a chance of winning the show. She is immensely talented, but it was always clear that she would be leaving this week.
The Biebz rocked up to perform his rather dull Christmas number, Under The Mistletoe, from his latest Christmas record, and Kelly Rowland took to the stage in pretty much next to nothing for a medley of tracks (When Love Takes Over, Down For Whatever and Commander). Scantily clad would be an understatement too, as thousands of the more conservative members of the public reached for the phone to make a complaint. Bore-off’s. The group performance saw the acts take on Hold On by Jackie Wilson.
There really has been a lot of Jackie Wilson in this series.
And then there were three; Little Mix, Marcus and Amelia. Considering it took some time for the series to get going, it's sure ending on a high note. Next week’s final promises to be captivating viewing.
