Pledge music

Pledge music has been something making a big impression on the scene over the last few months. It is a mechanism whereby fans can donate money to enable bands to record and release albums, when they themselves have fallen on hard times, and are struggling to fund the pricey costs of putting together a record. I think it is a really innovative and inspiring idea, the concept being that fans donate money in exchange for a multitude of different rewards. Donations are usually for differing amounts and carry with them really unique benefits, many being "one of a kind".

Signed albums, equipment, meet and greets, the chance to sing gang vocals, VIP passes to shows, and house shows, are just some examples of things you can often get your mitts on, and that is something you might not get the chance to take part in everyday. The fact is that all fans of a band want to support them, and they do that by buying albums, going to shows, etc. However, the chance to get their hands on some of the benefits, means it is a win-win for both fans and band alike.

It is a shame that the harsh ways of the music industry mean that bands just can’t afford to record albums as easily anymore, but it is a true indication of the hardcore fans bands have, as well as the sense of community amongst the rock scene, that this idea has got off the ground. The Blackout recently released Hope, their third album, which was fully funded by fans donating money, with a total of £40,000 being raised, which is a pretty impressive feat by anyone’s standards.

Funeral For A Friend have also released an EP in this way, and it could definitely be an idea that we see more of in the future, as bands try and fund releases, and fans donate, in the anticipation of getting some pretty unique and special items/experiences in return.
