In what can only presumably be a stop-gap release before they drop their sophomore album, Halestorm, led by the outstanding voice of front woman Lzzy Hale, release a six track covers EP, nodding their heads in the direction of the bands who have influenced them thus far in their career.
In terms of vocal quality, and musicianship, this group are up there with the best around at the moment, really working as a tight and effective unit across whatever they play, be it an original track, or a cover of someone else’s work. To their credit, this EP is short, sweet, and bang on the money, paying homage to their heroes, and sounding excellent in the process. They add their own twist to the tracks on offer here, making them sound fresh, new, and relevant in the process, and avoiding sounding corny or dated (always a potential pitfall of a covers release).
Slave To The Grind (by Skid Row), and All I Want To Do Is Make Love To You (by Heart) sound extraordinary, and Lzzy’s voice soars over these, as well as on the cover of Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance, in a beefed up and rocked out version of the hit pop single. A run through of Guns and Roses’ Out Ta Get Me is also of the highest quality, and their take on Temple of the Dog’s Hunger Strike is good too, but not one of the better tracks on display here; it didn’t do much for me anyway, but I am not familiar with the original at all. The final track on the EP doesn’t do much for me either, with I Want You (She’s So Heavy) by The Beatles sounding big, but failing to hit the mark. It might just be that there are better songs they could have chosen here, as it failed to captivate me as much as the other songs did.
Overall though, it is a great tribute to some of the group’s influences, and they certainly do not put their growing reputation to shame with this. I am eagerly awaiting their second album, as the debut was a great listen when it came out. As a band, they have so much talent, and so much to offer, and they could become a massive concern when that next release drops.
7.5/10
