Review – Christina Perri – lovestrong.

Christina Perri first rose to prominence off the back of the stark and heartbreaking Jar Of Hearts single, which has been around for some time. The track recently gate crashed the UK top 10 singles charts, having been massive across the pond for some time now. It was first used on So You Think You Can Dance in the States last summer, and it’s follow up success led to her signing a record deal with Atlantic Records shortly thereafter.

Chart success, prime time television slots, and inclusion in a Glee episode followed, sending the track supernova in the process, and making it a huge success, particularly here and in the US.

It is, quite simply, a breathtakingly beautiful song, and one of the breakout hits of the year thus far, from a singer who was totally unknown prior to the songs success.

As an album, lovestrong. was never going to live up to that particular song, but across an album awash with delicate harmonies, fragile melodies and tales of heartbreak and melancholia, there are some still very enjoyable songs.

Whereas the likes of Penguin, Bluebird, Sad Song, Tragedy and The Lonely are stark and haunting, they can oftentimes veer a little towards pedestrian territory, appearing somewhat sleepy in places. For those who love that style though, they will no doubt be considered album highlights. Personally, they don’t do a great deal for me, but they are hardly bad songs.

Lead single aside, there are some great moments on here. Second single Arms is a great song, as are the likes of the faster paced Bang Bang Bang (a quirky uptempo number detailing vengeance on an ex love) and Miles, which has a fantastically hooky chorus.

Perri has a gorgeously distinct voice, and throughout the album puts in some sterling hooks into her work, with heartfelt lyrics recalling personal experience, adding real depth and character to the songs she sings.

6.5/10
