Review - Rebecca Ferguson - Heaven

Rebecca Ferguson has a stunning voice, and it is easy to see why she did so well on the X Factor, ending up in second place behind the 2010 winner Matt Cardle. She will undoubtedly sell more records than Cardle as well in the future, as there is a real market for singers which such a rich soulful voice, and whose vocal lines will send shivers down even the most resolute of spines.

She has a really classic voice, and it lends itself to soul infused numbers like those found on Heaven really well. Ultimately, she isn't going to sell a lot of singles, but albums will really become her forte with work of this quality.

While Heaven is a solid listen, it is a little unspectacular in that there are no out and out standouts to really choose from. If I had to pick one ,it would probably be lead single Nothing's Real But Love or Teach Me How To Be Loved, but everything is pretty solid. The songs are easy listening, but they do tend to merge together when trying to distinguish them apart at times.

Her voice shines throughout, and although the songs may well not be up to the standards of the likes of Adele, with the right material, Rebecca Ferguson could really stand toe to toe with her. Perhaps by the second album, she will nail that down, but for now, Heaven is a pleasant listen, yet fails to ignite in a manner that would (for me) demand your attention and repeated listens.

It is a pleasant album though, and her voice is outstanding. But it's solid, yet unspectacular. She is undoubtedly one to watch though; when she gets it right, she will be unstoppable.

6.5/10
