Review - Selena Gomez & The Scene - When The Sun Goes Down

Breaking free from the shackles of her character in the hit Nickelodeon show Wizards of Waverley Place, Selena Gomez returns with her third solo outing, enlisting the help of her hired hands "the Scene" once more.

In all fairness, it is pop by numbers, but when it works well, like on recent single Hit The Lights, the results are excellent. However, the problem is that the rest of the album hardly fails to live up to expectations, or to her undoubted talent. Unfortunately, the majority of the songs are relatively forgettable and limp, with Middle of Nowhere and My Dilemma easily being the pick of the bunch, along with the aforementioned single. The Spanish influenced mentalness of Dices (Who Says) is also worthy of a listen.

The first single Love You Like A Love Song makes its inevitable appearance also, but pales in comparison to Hit The Lights, where the girl can really let loose on an outstanding pop song.

The problem here is that the songs are just not well written enough, and that (in many ways) is the fault of the team behind her. She is still a massive star, and that is unlikely to change any time soon (especially considering her relationship with "the Biebz") but this album could have been so much better if it had not been for the average songs.

The highlights are definitely worth checking out though.

3/10
