Review - Slash - Made In Stoke - 24/07/2011

Much like the Take That Live CD, the audio recording of Made In Stoke is a solid listen, but really needs to be watched along with the DVD to put the show into context, especially considering how special the show (recorded in Slash's birth town of Stoke-on-Trent) was for the icon himself and the lucky fans who managed to get tickets.

It sold out in seconds, and the anticipation for his return to Stoke was almost palpable.

On the audio, the more unfamiliar material is a challenging listen, but on the "hits" the album really comes across as powerfully as you would hope. However, it is still no substitute for watching the DVD of the show, which suits this setlist better than listening to over 20 tracks of live recorded material on CD.

Slash is as outstanding as ever on guitar, still the most iconic guitarist in the game, whilst Myles Kennedy is a complete beast on vocals, singing every song as though he wrote them. Without fail he puts the original vocalists in the shade on each occasion, without exception.

It is of course the likes of Rocket Queen, Night Train, Slither, Sweet Child o' Mine and Paradise City that steals the show, and are really special moments on a night such as this.

Sure, some of the impact is lost on the audio, but watching the legend strut the stage at the Victoria Hall on the DVD is a really special sight, and suits this recording much better. The DVD review will follow shortly.

The live CD makes a nice accompaniment, but is nothing more than a footnote next to the stage show.

Solid.

7/10
