Review - Lost Prophets - Manchester Academy 1 -

Having failed to maintain their arena filling/festival headliner billing over
the course of their last two records, which, have still been fucking belters,
one of the finest bands of a generation find their latest tour hitting Academy
venues once more in promotion of their excellent new offering Weapons; what is
special about this is that this band kill in venues like this for fun, and
although they should be playing bigger venues (and undoubtedly deserve to be
doing so off the back of their killer back catalogue), there is always
something special about seeing Lost Prophets in a venue such as this.
The band have one of the finest back catalogues around, and there are no
shortage of hits in their locker for nights such as this. Over the course of
two hours, the band prove just why they are one of the best bands this country
has produced in the last 20 years (approaching their 15th anniversary as a
band) and prove any doubters just why they are this fucking good.
It is a glorious set, dipping and weaving through the very best the band have
to offer, and even missing out some cuts which for other bands would be set
highlights; such is the calibre of their songcraft across the course of an
illustrious career.
Opening with the one two of new tracks Bring ' Em Down and Better Off Dead, the
latter falls a little flat, with Ian Watkins' vocals being lost through a
megaphone to recreate the album experience. As Can't Catch Tomorrow kicks in
though, the pace goes up a notch, and the band find their groove; they never
look back at this point. A Town Called Hypocrisy follows shortly thereafter,
another new song Another Shot, before a surprise inclusion of fan favourite
Make A Move (from the Start Something album) gets thrown into the mix.
THe stand out from their previous record Where WE Belong is simply mind-blowing
here tonight, and it doesn't end there; 4:AM Forever is huge, and what follows
is one of the finest 30 minutes of hits that could have possibly ever been
assembled. Jesus Walks, Last Summer, a colossal Rooftops and Shinobi prove the
bands powerhouse nature; but as the fan furoure becomes too much to ignore, on
request of the baying throng before them, the band kick into the rarely aired
We Are Godzilla, You Are Japan, the place erupts yet again to mass of flailing
bodies.
It doesn't end their; We Bring An Arsenal is immense, To Hell We RIde and the
closing one-two of Last Train Home and Burn Burn blow the roof clean off the
Academy's walls.
One of the prime cuts from Weapons may be missing in the curious absence of A
Song For Where I'm From, but as the blistering Everyday Combat and Sway bring
things to a ravenous conclusion, Lost Prophets prove once more just why they
are one of the definitive bands of this, or indeed any, generation.
