Sonisphere Cancelled (!!)

After what has been a strangely quiet opening few months of the year for Sonisphere Festival, it seems that everything has come crashing down around it with the cancellation touted yesterday on the internet forums not being mere speculation, but true.

The following (somewhat meagre) statement has been released today . . .

"It is with very heavy hearts and much regret that we announce the cancellation of Sonisphere Knebworth 2012. Putting the festival together in what is proving to be a very challenging year was more difficult than we anticipated and we have spent the last few months fighting hard to keep Sonisphere in the calendar. 


Unfortunately circumstances have dictated that we would be unable to run the festival to a standard that both the artists and that Sonisphere’s audience would rightly expect. We want to express our deepest regrets to the artists and to thank all the staff, suppliers and contractors who worked so hard with us to try and pull off what has proven to be an impossible task and we know how much they share in our disappointment. We also want to send a huge thanks to the Sonisphere fans who stuck by us and we are so sorry that we can’t fulfil what we set out to do. 


Ticket holders will automatically receive a full refund direct from their ticket agents".

BLOWS.BIG.BABY.CHUNKS . . .

Absolutely gutted about the cancellation of what was shaping up to be such a fantastic festival, and is a big shocker coming off the back of a stellar 2011 edition (which sold out for the first time ever) and one of the best line-ups of festival season to date. Queen ft Adam Lambert, Kiss, Faith No More and a sterling undercard including the likes of Refused, Evanescence, The Darkness, Glassja, Mastodon, Andrew WK, The Blackout, Hundred Reasons, Marilyn Manson et al should not have been canned - what a line up. I find it hard to believe that ticket sales have been that low it needed to be cancelled.

Either way, it is an absolute tragedy, whether due to ticket sales, the effect of the Olympics, or the over-saturation in general of the festival market, but I find it hard to believe that other festivals survive yet one with such a great reputation and spread of bands takes the hit.

A real shame. Just LOOK at that line-up! It wasn't even finished off. Motley Crue potentially Kiss' special guests, and a number of other slots to finish off, Sonisphere 2012 promised to be something very special indeed.

Here's praying for shows from some of the acts involved, particularly from the likes of Queen and Adam Lambert. I NEED to see that show and SOON.
