American Idol – Week 2

Rolling into week 2, it was really anyone’s guess as to who would stand out on show night this week. There were some killer performances last week across the board, and therefore the bar was set pretty high for this, a show where the contestants would have to sing tracks from the year they were born.

As with the previous show, there were some solid performances by the contestants, and some brilliant highlights. My two top choices from last week were yet again, incredibly assured on the stage, and put in a sterling effort.

Pia Toscano once more looked a superstar, and settled into a crazy jumpsuit for a run through of Whitney Houston’s “Where Do Broken Hearts Go?” with an up tempo twist. Her vocals were stunning throughout, and it was a great version. The only downside for me was that I would have loved to have heard her sing the original version, as I know she would slay the vocals effortlessly. But still, it was an awesome performance. Scotty was once again on top form, performing “Can I Trust You With My Heart?” by Travis Tritt, with a strong, authentic vocal showing. This boy can really sing, and at 17, to think he has such an iconic and unique voice, can only bode well for his future.

James Durban nearly stole the night with his Jovi classic “I’ll Be There For You”, and is looking ever more the rock star. I still think he will go far, and I genuinely hope to see him in the final. A brilliant singer, with great presence, and some crazy “Lambert-esque” vocals. Tyler has also promised to sing with him if he makes the final, and that will be one NOT to miss! Casey did an epic and twisted version of Smells Like Teen Spirit, manically playing his electric bass in the process, and Lauren Alaina is still going strong, even if her song was good but not great.

For me though, the winner on the night (just) was Jacob Lusk, mixing it up and steering clear from the gospel this week, to completely blow everyone away with a killer run through of Hearts 80’s pop-rock classic “Alone”. Paul McDonald was solid, as was Thia Megia.

This week saw Karen Rodrigues get eliminated, but the decision was not unanimous. J-Lo has been a big fan from day one, and she clearly did not want to let her go. However, the judges save was not utilised, and we now have our second female eliminated.

Who will go next week?

Randy’s final thought, which J-Lo concurred with, was that this week showed that there was some “hot competition” in Idol season 10, and it could really be anyone’s game. Probably the most diverse bunch of contestants that have ever graced an Idol stage, it is too close to call only two weeks in. I, for one, can’t wait to see how this all unfolds in the coming weeks.

Observations

- The group performances are still THE most cringe worthy 3 minutes in television, whether on
Idol or X Factor.

- Merging Steppenwolf’s “Born to be Wild” with Gaga’s “Born This Way” shouldn’t have ever
worked, and it didn’t

- Seacrest, you introduced us all to two people I have never heard of, then missed the fact that
another seat along was Carly Smithson – someone clearly needs to get him a copy of Tear The
World Down by We Are The Fallen, as he is clearly missing out

- Lee DeWyze has a tremendous voice, and is genuinely just a really nice guy

- Will.I.Am’s plastic hair is epic – wouldn’t mind some of that myself for a night out!

- Haley Reinhart has amazing legs – that would have been enough to keep her in this week in my
book alone!

- Karen Rodrigues will be missed, and her bi lingual performance of Mariah Carey’s “Hero” a
couple of weeks back was magical

- A Tyler/Durban collaboration would be immense

- Does Lee DeWyze have Randy Jackson’s lookalike on bass?
