I thought that the last week was pretty long to be honest. However, in comparison to the week that Chris Moyles and Comedy Dave have had, mine sort of pales into insignificance.
With Comic Relief fast approaching, they embarked on a record breaking feat, attempting to host the longest radio show in BBC Radio One history. Intending to break Simon Mayo’s longstanding record of 37 hours, Chris and Dave were to attempt to broadcast from Wednesday morning at 6.30am, until approximately Thursday night at 10.30pm. Their target was 37 hours and 5 minutes. All the while, guests would come in to keep their spirits high, it would be broadcast over the red button on BBC television, and people were requested to text in and show their support, donating £1 to Comic Relief in the process.
That task was mammoth enough, depriving themselves of sleep, and trying to run the biggest radio station in the country.
However, as the feat grew ever nearer, there was talk that they would perhaps attempt to break the world record of 52 hours. That would therefore mean staying up and continuing to host the show until 10.30 on Friday morning.
Their attempt was incredibly successful, and managed to raise a mind boggling amount for Comic Relief, somewhere over the £2.4million mark. They managed to break the world record, and broadcast for the full 52 hours. The last part of the show I heard was at 8.20am Friday morning, and they were already at the £1.3 million mark – they were trying to get £1.5 million by the end of the show, so it was a phenomenal achievement to not only smash through that, but to get nigh on £1 million more for such a worthy cause.
All in all the segments of the show which I heard were brilliant, and it was a tremendous achievement, raising a staggering amount.
I would LOVE to have had a go at doing it as well. Playing tracks and talking music for two solid days? Sounds like my idea of heaven . . .
Well done Chris Moyles and Comedy Dave.
