E.T. (aka Extra Terrestrial) is the latest single from Katy Perry’s sophomore album, Teenage Dream, right, and I heard it for the very first time today on Radio One on my way into work. This completely took me by surprise. It took me until nearly the end of the track to work out who was singing it, and although the rapping section did sound like Kanye West, I just couldn’t tell whose song this was.
At first, I thought that it was a t.A.T.u song from back in the day (remember them? yes, the lesbians kissing in the rain), as it had real similarities to the type of tracks they used to release, namely All The Things She Said, and All About Us. I was a little shocked to find out that this was Katy Perry’s latest single. The track has a somewhat dark and atmospheric presence and tone to it, masking the ridiculous lyrics it contains. However, lyrics aside, the song is a brilliant track, showcasing a distinct move away from the usual bubblegum-pop you would associate with her musically.
It will undoubtedly do well on its release, and I massively enjoyed it. It was a shock to hear her sound so different, and the interplay between Ms Perry and Mr West works so well throughout.
Pulsating backing beats, and a drum track to die for only add to the brilliance of this song, and this is sure to be another bona-fide hit record for her.
