Review - Avril Lavigne - Goodbye Lullaby
Avril Lavigne’s latest album Goodbye Lullaby has just been released, so I thought that I would give it a listen, having enjoyed her latest single, What The Hell, which has become somewhat of a guilty pleasure of the last few weeks, with the video doing the rotations on the music channels.
I must admit, on first listen, I was pretty disappointed. The lead single aside, there really isn’t much more to get your teeth into. Push and Wish You Were Here were ok, but nothing out of this world. The rest just seemed to be a bit dirgy and throwaway really, other than Remember When which is a beautiful song, and the only other track worth bothering with in my opinion.
That aside, the rest was just unmemorable for me, and didn’t really do anything for me whatsoever, being somewhat forgettable. I started to get a bit bored by the end as well, skipping some of it, which is never a good sign.
I must admit I was a little surprised, as I thought it might have been quite a good release. Avril is pretty good at the pop rock sing-along anthem, which was sorely lacking here. Over the years she has released so many good tracks that have become guilty pleasures for all. On this though, there was definitely nothing to rival the likes of Girlfriend off her last album, which went straight to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in the States on release, and which performed well over this side of the pond aswell. A lot of it seemed to be really slow to mid tempo, and other than the first single, there was no energetic tracks at all.
Disappointing
3/10 – salvaged from a lower score only by What The Hell and Remember When . . .
Great cover though, in better news!
Listen to this instead - one of her finest moments
