Review - Pixie Lott - Young Foolish Happy
Returning to tackle that often troublesome sophomore release, Ms Lott is back with another album of fine pop music, that will see her ease through any rough patches that may have been envisioned, and which happens to even the best of acts early in their careers. Young Foolish Happy sees her mature from her teenage years with style, yet still keeping her foot firmly on the path as to what type of artist she wants to be.
It starts in a rather average fashion, before the outstanding and anthemic lead single All About Tonight picks things up a few notches; even all these months later, it is still so easy to see why this was the perfect track for her, and why it has undoubtedly been one of the singles of the year. Unforgettable pop perfection, with a hook and a chorus to absolutely fall in love with.
After such a glorious moment, inevitably the second single What Do You Take Me For? And Nobody Does It Better tends to fall a little bit flat. Fear not though, as Kiss The Stars comes next and is one of the best tracks she has written in her short career.
With a pulsating beat and a chorus that will lodge itself in your head for days much like All About Tonight, it is one of the high points of a very good and very solid album. Stevie On The Radio takes a different approach, but still works very, very well, and there is something about Lott’s take on “sprinkles on momma’s apple pie” that make it unforgettable. It is yet another great pop hook, on an album of many.
As expected, she is at her best on the up tempo numbers, but can still emote in solid fashion also, the likes of Everybody Hurts Sometimes, Dancing On My Own, Birthday, and Bright Lights (Good Life) Part II (ft Tinchy Stryder) all allowing her to flex her vocal abilities to great effect.
You Win and We Just Go On round things off in an enjoyable and reliable manner, both well crafted slower tempo pop songs, but which work well with her distinctive vocal.
Young Foolish Happy is the sound of Pixie Lott maturing with style and class. Long may it continue.
This is a great record.
