Lil Wayne – Tha Carter IV

One of the biggest rappers in the game, Lil Wayne returns with the long awaited Tha Carter IV, hoping to replicate the enormo success of his previous record (naturally called Tha Carter III). Widely considered one of the best rappers alive, the Young Money/Cash Money mogul has a massive reputation, and has some massive sales figures to live up to with his first record proper since his release from prison late last year.

He has nothing to worry about though, with his first week US sales likes to hit nigh on 1 million units in its first week alone.

As a record though, it is pretty good listen, especially for someone who doesn’t normally frequent hip hip/rap albums a great deal. Weezy has a dynamic flow about him, as he spits his curse filled lyrics from start to finish, and although he will be a censors nightmare, his material is outstanding in places. Always quick witted, always razor sharp, and always at the top of his game, you just know that this is a massive album, and one that will go down extremely well within the rap community.

It couldn’t come at a better time either, with Eminem back on the scene, and Jay-Z and Kanye teaming up for their Watch The Throne collaboration. Rap is clearly enjoying a bit of a renaissance at the moment, and this will be without a doubt one of the finest rap albums of the year.

There is a lot to it as well, and it does feel as though its real genius won’t be unlocked on first listen alone, but from numerous plays. There is plenty to get stuck in to as well, with A list guest collaborations aplenty. Drake, Busta Rhymes, Nas, John Legend, T-Pain, Rick Ross and Jadakiss are all in the mix, with Legend contributing to one of the albums standouts, So Special. As for Busta, he is on untouchable form in the scintillating Outro to the record.

Other highlights are the early big hitters Blunt Blowin, MegaMan and the Eminem-esque genius of 6 Foot 7 Foot. She Will is another cracker as well. Latest single How To Love has a different flow to it altogether, but is still a good song, and one that will get quite catchy after a few listens.

Tha Carter IV has some crazy beats throughout, some genius collaborations and Weezy on top form with his lyrical spit.

One of the biggest rappers in the game is back, and it’s been well worth the wait.

7.5/10 – a few more listens should see this score increase as well. There is simply so much to digest on first listen alone.
