Watch The Throne.
An emphatic, resounding title; and one that fits the bill too for an album of such quality.
Watch The Throne is a BIG record; two of the biggest rap names in the game, collaborating on some of the slickest hip hop you will ever hear. Watch The Throne is a record of polished production, sick lyrical interchanges and the desire for each to be pushed to greater and greater heights with the challenge of facing off against one of their best friends.
The duo take things to extraordinary heights with some genius samples, some incredible A list guest spots, and two interchangeable styles that work so well when they go blow for blow and exchange lines. Each is up to the challenge as well, and Watch The Throne is a cracking body of work.
No Church In The Wild and Lift Off are two cracking opening songs before the lyrical spit goes up a level on Ni**as In Paris and the lead single flows in with a phenomenal Otis Redding sample on the predictably titled . . .ahem . . .Otis.
In terms of other highlights, Who Gon Stop Me, That’s My Bitch, Welcome To The Jungle and Murder To Excellence are all big tracks, but that can be said of pretty much everything on offer to varying degrees. By the time the closing one-two of Made In America and Why I Love You depart, it is clear that the dynasty the two have already established independently has been added to with class, quality, and a collaboration of epic proportions.
One of the biggest records of the year, and one that totally lives up to all the hype surrounding it. Watch The Throne is two of the best in the game not only watching their throne, but guarding it fiercely with a body of work that could well be unparalleled in the rap game throughout 2011.
Watch The Throne is yet another album of great substance as well, and it will probably get better on further spins.
Sheer class.
8.5/10
