Review - Aiden - Some Kind Of Hate

As I have said repeatedly on this blog in the past, I have a lot of time for Aiden as a band, and feel that they have been pretty harshly treated at times over the years.

They are a hard working, honest band, who are ultimately a bunch of talented dudes who have written some exceptional music over the years. Always flying under the radar since their initial push at the start of their careers, they have quietly got on with their thing, always over looked, yet always putting out solid records.

Some Kind Of Hate is the second album they have released this year, coming hot off the heels of Disguises, which dropped earlier in the year. Not a flawless record by any stretch of the imagination, but Disguises was a solid offering. This one is the same. The formula remains the same, as the band stick to what they know (and do) best; anthemic, catchy, goth-punk.

There Will Be Blood is a gut busting opening salvo, with a divine guitar lead bleeding throughout an anthemic hook laden chorus. It is a fine track, as are the likes of Broken Bones, Freedom From Religion, and Deactivate. The opening number, and the latter two tracks mentioned above, also make ingenious use of voiceover samples, and work really well in the mix.

The two covers included here (Misfits and Joy Division respectively) are relatively forgettable, and could have been omitted.

At a relatively short 10 tracks long (not all of which are at the standards set by the albums highlights), there could well be an argument that the band should have released one album this year, taking in the best of this record, and that of Disguises. I would probably agree with that summation. Although this record, alongside its predecessor, is yet another solid offering from Aiden, an amalgamated effort of the two would have seen this up the ante from being a solid and decent effort, into becoming a spectacular one.

Still, solid work from Aiden yet again, and I respect that alot. Great to see the gang vocals back from the band too! Here's hoping that 2012 will see them press on at last!

There are not many bands that deserve some luck more than Aiden.

7/10
