Review - Living With Lions - Holy Shit!
On balance, there is nothing inherently wrong with the sophomore offering from Canada's Living With Lions, although it seems apparent time and time again that, although a relatively satisfactory listen, there is nothing really truly groundbreaking about it.
Walking a path not dissimilar to early Four Year Strong, it very much focuses around anthemic pop punk-esque hooks with a bit of beef behind it, although ultimately, the songs are not as accomplished as they might be. Everything is all very listenable, but compared to the early FYS stuff, this pales into insignificance.
If they get the song craft right, they really could be something very special, but they will need to work on that for their next album.
Holy Shit (awesome title aside) has two solid highlights, the catchy Honesty, Honestly and its closer When We Were Young, but everything else is somewhat vanilla at times.
Nothing inherently is wrong, but the songs are not as memorable as they need to be to make an impression in such a strong scene. It also doesn't help that their peers have put out some fantastic records over the course of the past 12 months.
However, if they work on what they are doing, and can match and surpass the highlights from Holy Shit, Living With Lions could come back with a truly outstanding third record.
5/10
