Review - Deaf Havana - Fools & Worthless Liars
Fools & Worthless Liars, the latest offering from Brit up and comers Deaf Havana is a scorching album from start to finish, which proves just how far the boys have come in the last year or so.
It is an accomplished take on their best sound, and the song writing is straight from the top drawer throughout, with front man James Veck-Gilodi putting in the performance of his career to date.
The Past Six Years is a gorgeously melodic opening introduction to the record, before Youth In Retrospect bursts into life in stunning fashion, signalling the start of the album proper. Deaf Havana sound like they have a point to prove, and they do it in outstanding fashion, with a Foo Fighters-esque vibe dripping throughout the core of one of the finest moments on this record.
Aiming for the stratosphere, and striking gold throughout, the record just goes from strength to strength. I Will Try sees the band whip out the anthemic "woah's", before the stunning Little White Lies blows minds with a divine guitar line throughout and the gorgeous vocal accompaniment of Portia Conn to add some real light and shade to proceedings. It is a massively anthemic number, which signals the arrival of this band into the UK's big leagues.
Times Change, Friends Leave is fucking huge, as is Leeches, with one of the most stirring fade out and returns seen all year. The World or Nothing is another highlight, which is a great song with soaring melodies and a big guitar line. Pounding drum beats, one of the finest vocal showings of the year, gang vocals, and scintillating fade out and return with the beat; it's all here, and its pretty immense.
Nelson's County and Fifty Four are also two great songs to round off what is undoubtedly one of the best records of the entire year. They deserve nothing but critical and commercial acclaim for this album, but whether they get what they truly deserve off the back of this will be up to the fans.
You won't get many a rock record better than this from the UK scene this year.
Stunning.
9.5/10
