Quickly rising to prominence over the last 12 months as the main man in the
dubstep world, one-time From First To Last ring leader Sonny Moore has well and
truly reinvented himself as the biggest breakthrough star in the game, with a
slew of Grammies to his name coming off the back of his two breakout EP's Scary
Monsters and Nice Sprites and Bangarang.
Review - Skrillex - Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites
Scary Monsters came first, consisting of 6 tracks and 3 remixes, announcing his arrival on the scene. It may well be what the kids are listening to these days, but it goes straight over my head. Whilst it is clear he is immensely talented with his dubstep electronics, for me, it is a little too "rave" to really hit the mark. The opening one-two of the Rock N Roll (Will Take You To The Mountain) and the title track are listenable, but on the whole, it just feels like an incoherently structures mish mash of abrasive beats, sounds and bass drops, having more than a hint of "random" thrown into the mix.
It is clearly exceptional if you are into this kinda thing, but it is not for me.

Bangarang is pretty much pound for pound identical to the debut, save for the phenomenal title track which ,although takes a little time to grow, when it does, it is a banger. A huge anthemic number, it sets itself out as the stand on both of these records, and really does feel like the only track on either of the EP's that you would come back for again and again.
It is a thumping, fist pumping bass dropping bad ass dubstep track, and leaves the rest trailing in its wake.
ALthough the hype machine does seem somewhat unjustified off the strength of the material, what you cannot deny is the sheer talent and the breathtaking precision with which all of the sounds put down by Skrillex are executed.
It is clinical, fast paced and the sound of 2012. It may not do much for me, but we will be hearing a lot more of this diminutive dance peddler in the future
