Review- Arctic Monkeys - Suck It And See

Arctic Monkeys have sat in the upper echelon of the Indie world for quite some time now, revered as one of the best bands in the game. I have never really seen the appeal of late, with their later material a little on the dull side in comparison to the electric debut.

Lead singer Alex Turner admitted recently that the band are not really a sing-a-long band anymore, and I would have to agree. Their later material is average at best in my view, and has nothing on the likes of Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor.

They have very much morphed into a different band altogether in recent times.

Suck It And See is yet another rather dull record, which, although has a couple of bright moments, ultimately fails to ignite in the way that good Indie really should. Formulaic and a little bit uninspiring, it sees the band peddle somewhat calmer waters to differing effect.

Don’t Sit Down Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair offers up the only really bite of the record, making it the easy choice for lead single, as it is the clear highlight on a sleepy album. Of the more melodic slower jams, Love Is A Laserquest and the title track are the best of a fairly mediocre bunch.

In places it is relatively listenable, but there is just no real excitement on the album, except for the lyrically ridiculous, but beasty lead single.

It is the sound of a band operating firmly in their comfort zone tough, and doing exactly what they want. The frustrating part is that it’s miles behind where they started from, and their most definitive sound.

It won’t affect sales, their massive universal appeal or fanbase, but Suck It And See is a plain album, with very little to offer the more casual listener.

3.5/10
