Review - Cobra Starship - Night Shades
Cobra Starship have been losing their identity of late, and with Night Shades, they reach for universal mainstream appeal with a sound that sees them miss the mark by some way.
Older hits like Guilty Pleasures, Snakes on a Plane (Bring It) or their global smash Good Girls Go Bad were great moments of pop music which saw them receive deserved plaudits, but Night Shades almost tries too hard, when they should have stuck with what they were doing.
It’s all very forgettable on the whole, with You Make Me Feel (ft Sabi) and Disaster Boy being the only two tracks really worth bothering with. The former is an attempt to replicate the successes of Good Girls Go Bad, but although one of the highlights here, it is still not a patch on that hit record.
The rest veers between horrid and listenable (if uninspiring), but is not a good representation of what they are capable of. Fanboys will once more cry out for a Midtown reunion after listening to this, and it’s clear that in trying to go for chart domination, they have gone so far away from the band they were, that they have rendered themselves barely recognisable anymore.
They should stick to what they do best, as this really isn’t it. A return to their former sound would be a welcome return next time out.
